Measurements

For a small adult foot - women.

Directions

Top of sock:

Cast on 48 stitches, using No 10 needles.

Make the rib thus:

K1, then rib as k1 p1 for 20 rows. This is the cuff at the top of the sock.
Technique suggestion - Slip the first stitch on each row purlwise, and then k1 p1 as usual. This provides a set of ridges that make sewing up easy and neat.

Change to No 9 needles. Stocking Stitch for 20 rows or as long as you want it. This will take you to the ankle.
Technique suggestion - Slip the first stitch on each knit row purlwise, and then knit as usual. On each purl row, slip the first stitch knitwise, then purl as usual.

Heel shaping:

First side of the heel - change to No 10 needles. Using the slip first stitch technique, continue.
Knit 13 then turn and purl back.
Knit 12 then purl back.
Knit 11 then purl back. Keep doing this until there are 4 stitches on the needle.

Now, knit 4, then pickup the loop between the last knitted stitch, and the next one on the left-hand needle, and knit these two stitches together. This prevents a hole in your knitting, where you are picking up the stitches on the left-hand needle.
Purl back.
Knit 5, then pickup as before and knit with the 6th stitch. Purl back.
Knit 6, and continue until you have all 13 stitches backon your needle.
Knit across all the stitches and continue.

Second side of heel

Purl 13 then turn and knit back.
Purl 12 then knit back.
Purl 11 then knit back. Keep doing this until there are 4 stitches on the needle.

Now, purl 4, then pickup the loop between the last knitted stitch, and the next one on the left-hand needle, and purl these two stitches together. This prevents a hole in your knitting, where you are picking up the stitches on the left-hand needle.
Knit back.
Purl 5, then pickup as before and purl with the 6th stitch. Knit back.
Purl 6, and continue until you have all 13 stitches backon your needle.

The top of the foot:

Change to No 9 needles. SS your 48 stitches for 34 rows or as long as you need, to make the foot of the sock.

Making the toe:

Knit 11, k2 together, k1, k2 through backof loop, k16, k2 together through backof loop, k1, k2 together, k11.
Purl back.
Knit 10, k2 tog, k1, k2 tbl, k14, k2 tbl, k1, k2 tog, k10. Purl back.
Knit 9, k2 tog, k1, k2 tbl, k12, k2 tbl, k1, k2 tog, k9. Purl back.
Continue this way until
Knit 4, k2 tog, k1, k2 tbl, k2, k2 tbl, k1, k2 tog, k4. Purl back.
Cast off.

Sewing up:

Sew across the toe casting off.

Now sew from the toe along the underside of the foot, up the heel and the back of the foot, and up the back of the leg. Thread the ends in without making a knot, as this will make the sock uncomfortable.

How does it look?

Neat! I can make a pair of these in a day if I sit at it. More usually, I can make two pairs in a week. They are firm and suitable for under your joggers or work boots.

Enjoy, and pass on to other knitters or make for your local op-shop and church sale.
