Jacque's Knitting Place

I was six when my father taught me to knit. My mother knitted for reasons of economy and because she enjoyed it. She would acquire used garments and unpick the wool for knitting into garments for her four children. Mum was a very fast knitter and could make a child's garment in a few days.

When I began knitting my parents jokingly called my stitch "moth" stitch (as a joke on moss stitch) because it had so many holes in it. The first real garment I made was a little jumper for my aunt's first baby. Over the years I've made at least two children's jumpers a year, for my own four children. Now I knit for Chloe, my grand-daughter born in 1993.

Then last year my daughter Karen told us she was expecting a sibling for Jessie (6) so I bought heaps of 6ply wool in green, yellow and pink. For some reason the pink called to me and so I made leggings and cardies and vests and all. So when Josh arrived, healthy and beautiful, Karen didn't feel right about putting him in pink. I argued that he wouldn't notice but this didn't wash unfortunately.

So there I was with lots of wool, and...I discovered a wonderful discussion forum on sock knitting, and another on lace knitting. Since December of 2002 I've knitted many pairs of socks, and I'm loving it.

I am keeping a clearfile of every pattern I have knitted, on a year-by-year basis. Each pattern has my handwritten notes to say what wool I used, the band if I have one (some of the wools I've had for - hmmm - 30 years) a little sample of the wool, who it was for, any changes I made to the pattern, and so on.

While knitting, I also love to watch the changing weather in the panoranic views of Wellington harbour outside my windows.
